The Emergency Operations Center (COE) and Barrick Pueblo Viejo announced the evacuation of 5,000 mine employees yesterday in response to a flood alert resulting from rising water levels in the El Llagal reservoir under construction by the mining company in the province of Sanchez Ramirez. COE director General Juan Manuel Mendez said that 123 local residents were also evacuated from nearby communities. The mining company has temporarily suspended operations leaving only minimum staff at the site. Barrick said that the rain falling in the region is at record levels. The dam is at risk of bursting its banks amid the heavy rains, Toronto-based Barrick said on its regional website. http://barrickpuebloviejo.com/
