Puerto Rican drug trafficker Jose Figueroa Agosto, dubbed the Pablo Escobar of the Caribbean, has been sent to the Metropolitan Detention Center (MDC) Brooklyn, New York for security reasons, as reported in Puerto Rican newspaper El Nuevo Dia. His brother, Jorge Luis Figueroa Agosto was also taken from Puerto Rico for security reasons. Both are accused of heading a drug network that imported cocaine from the Dominican Republic. The MDC is regarded as an institution for special missions, such as the detention of pretrial offenders, the treatment of inmates with serious or chronic medical problems, or the containment of extremely dangerous, violent, or escape-prone inmates.

This week a Puerto Rican judge denied a retrial request for Figueroa Agosto's 209-year sentence handed down in 2005 for the murder of Arnaldo Martinez (Nandy El Gruero) in 2003. Four years into the sentence, the so-called Junior Capsula escaped from the Puerto Rican prison using a forged identity and is said to have led a major drug trafficking network in the DR, in addition to living a jet set life that ended when he was pursued in September 2009. On 17 June 2010, US and Puerto Rican authorities arrested him in San Juan.
