The Embassy of the United States in the Dominican Republic and the US Center for Disease Control (CDC) through the US President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) have donated more than RD$35 million worth of equipment for clinical labs and blood banks. The donation will help improve labs at the Ministry of Public Health Dr. Defillo National Public Health Laboratory and at the Robert Reid Cabral, Nuestra Senora de la Altagracia Maternity and Luis Eduardo Aybar public hospitals in the National District and the Jose Maria Cabral y Baez hospital in Santiago.

US Ambassador Raul H. Yzaguirre and Oliver Morgan, director of CDC in the DR, presented the donation to Public Health Minister Bautista Rojas Gomez. This is the first phase of a joint initiative to improve the capacity of government labs to improve AIDS detection in pregnant women and early diagnosis in infants in the country's leading hospitals. The donation also seeks to improve lab services with the donation of state-of-the-art equipment and staff training.
