Grupo Leon Jimenes announced yesterday that it would focus on the beverage industry, highlighting its acquisition of 20 brands and 33 products in the beer, malt, soft drink and water industries in the Caribbean region. The company announced that it had sold shares in La Aurora S.A. to family member, Guillermo Leon Herbert, who has presided over that affiliate of the E Leon Jimenes group of companies for more than 15 years. E Leon Jimenes announced that the beer division of the group, the Cerveceria Nacional Dominicana would continue to distribute La Aurora nationwide, but would divest itself from production and export activities.

La Aurora has been family-run since it was founded in 1903. E Leon Jimenes had earlier divested itself of its Marlboro cigarette producing operations.

The deal includes the company's brands (such as Aurora, Guillermo Leon and Leon Jimenes and the company's cigar factory in the Dominican Republic. The building where Aurora Preferido cigars are rolled in Santiago is still owned by E. Leon Jimenes.

"I'm very happy. Very excited," said Leon during an interview with Cigar Aficionado. "Now we can make faster decisions. That's an advantage. The philosophy won't change, the philosophy of how we handle business."

Jose Blanco, head of marketing for Aurora, said that the company would "continue the tradition" that it has had for more than a century of "making good cigars."
