Geologist Osiris de Leon attributed to serious construction flaws the need to evacuate over 6,000 residents in the vicinity of the waste reservoir under construction by Barrick Gold in Sanchez Ramirez province. As reported in El Caribe, he said the reservoir under construction has a major fissure at the 129-meter level. The dam is now at the height of 140 meters over sea level of a total 182.5 meters projected.
De Leon said that the fissure should force the builders to reconsider the present design and construction process.
The reservoir is under construction for storing waste materials from the use of highly toxic cyanide in the gold extracting process in the mine in the north-central province.
Hoy reports that the Emergency Operations Center (COE) has issued a red alert for some 20 communities in the area of the El Llagal reservoir where intense rains have been falling.
Mining operations in the past and proposed by Falconbridge (now Falcondo Xstrata Nickel), Cerro Maimon and the Pueblo Viejo mining concession (now under Barrick Gold) have been known to have major adverse effects and threaten the ecology of the country's central region, with a major cost to the quality of waters and soils in that region.
