After almost a year of exile in the Dominican Republic, ousted Honduras President Manuel Zelaya has returned to Honduras. Very popular in his country, Zelaya sought refuge in the Dominican Republic after President Leonel Fernandez played a leading role in defending the legality of Zelaya and his presidency.

He was ousted in a June 2009 coup when the military, judiciary and even elements of his own government rejected a motion for him to continue in power. He was deported after he insisted on pushing ahead a controversial referendum to change the constitution to allow him to stand for re-election. The Supreme Court at the time said that it had ordered the removal of the President to defend the rule of law.

Zelaya's return was negotiated after he signed an agreement with Honduran President Porfirio Lobo on 22 May. The agreement reinstated Honduras in the OAS, which had suspended the country's membership after the coup.
