Males make up 76% of the country's traffic accident victims, according to preliminary data in a study presented yesterday at an inter-institutional meeting headed by the National Social Security Council (CNSS).

The study, "Epidemiologic and Cost Estimation of Traffic Accidents in the Dominican Republic", also stressed the fact that 75% of the accident victims are between the ages of 19 and 49, while public transport and motorcycle users are the most affected, composing 65% of all victims. The research found that accidents increase by 20% during the months of March and September, while Sundays and Mondays are the days when most accidents happen.

The study, reported in all of today's newspapers, adds that 83% of accident victims are treated at public hospitals. During the meeting, CNSS general manager Rafael Perez Modesto said that the study represented "a great opportunity for all institutions with responsibilities in the area of traffic accidents protection, to join forces and work together and in harmony towards the protection to the Dominican population." The study seeks to establish the cost of traffic accidents in terms of direct medical costs as well as the costs to productivity.
