Fewer storms are predicted for this year's hurricane season compared to previous years, but areas of the Caribbean, Central America, Mexico and the United States should take the necessary precautions to prevent loss of life and damage to property.

According to the United States National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), there will be between 12 and 18 storms of which between 6 to 10 will become hurricanes and of these, 3 to 6 will be major storms in Category 3 or greater. Bill Read, the director of the National Hurricane Center in Miami, Florida, said that it was a big mistake to use the forecasts as a barometer for whether or not to be prepared.

He recalled that, there were only six storms in the early season forecast in the year that Hurricane Andrew destroyed most of South Florida. NOAA is forecasting a slightly more active season than normal.
