The First Collegiate Tribunal of the Penal Chamber of the Court of the First Instance of the province of Santo Domingo has convicted an evangelical pastor for the rape of eight boys in a shelter located in the municipality of Santo Domingo East and sent him to 20 years in prison. Diario Libre says that Jose Antonio Dionisio was found guilty and was also fined RD$2 million for damages and suffering. The charges of which he was found guilty involve the violation of articles 330 and 331 of Law 136-03, which institutes the Code for the Protection of Boys, Girls and Adolescents.
The court ordered Dionisio to serve his sentence in the La Victoria Prison. According to the case file presented by the deputy prosecutor, Aleyda Olmos, 36 children were found lodged in the "Adulam" childcare center. She added that rigorous psychological and physical examinations had established that eight of the minors had been raped, supposedly by the evangelical pastor. The children were transferred to the Child Care Center for Boys Girls and Adolescents before being released to their parents and guardians. The shelter in the Prados del Cachon sector of Santo Domingo East, was raided in April 2009 after some parents of the children housed there complained to the authorities.
