Hoy newspaper comments today that the increase in taxes and the electricity rate is the usual prescription when the country has signed a stand-by arrangement with the IMF, as at present. "Possible reasons of political convenience, tied to the re-election interest, had postponed these penalties until now, when the 2012 electoral panorama is defined," writes the editorialist. President Leonel Fernandez recently declined his aspirations to be the PLD presidential candidate in 2012.

The editorial writer says that the new taxes seek to cover the enormous fiscal deficit. But the writer observes that, "Despite the deficit being the result of a fall in tax collections and the high level of public spending, the fiscal package presented is not complemented by a government commitment to reduce spending. In addition, just shortly the spending was increased with the appointment of numerous diplomatic staff, and on the other hand, nothing indicates the government has fulfilled its previously announced objective of reducing public administration expenditures by 12%."
