PRD presidential candidate Hipolito Mejia says that the new taxes are unnecessary and that they will affect the finances of small and medium sized companies.
"For a long time, the economic commission of the PRD and myself have warned the government to reduce its spending, to eliminate the surplus payrolls, to stop using the national budget to boost their popularity, but the government never paid attention and now is transferring its inefficiency to the people, forcing them to pay more taxes," said Mejia, as reported in El Caribe.
He said the PLD government lied to the people again when it said it would not raise taxes, at least this year through its Economy Minister Temistocles Montas.
PRD economist Arturo Martinez Moya estimated the government could collect more than RD$20 billion with the new measure, not the RD$9.5 billion estimated by the government when pushing through the bill that is now in the PLD-majority Senate.
