Former President of Colombia Alvaro Uribe, who is visiting the Dominican Republic, has stressed the need to send government officials to jail if they are found to be involved in drug trafficking. Speaking in Santiago yesterday, he said that leaders needed to show determination in order for this to happen. Uribe said that counterintelligence was needed, and that people had to be motivated to denounce any cases. He said that drug trafficking destroys democratic institutions and families in Latin America, and that it needs to be confronted with determination.

In yesterday's speech to Santiago business leaders on "Democratic security and business and economic development", Uribe warned that drug trafficking was the leading threat to citizen security and that political determination played the most important role in confronting the criminality that accompanies drug trafficking.
