The three Dominicans who set out to climb Mount Everest, Karim Mella, Ivan Gomez and Federico Jovine (who abandoned his bid 300 meters before reaching the summit) spent US$300,000 and two months in Nepal preparing for the feat of becoming the first two Dominicans to conquer the world's highest peak on 21 May 2011.
President Leonel Fernandez recently promoted Ivan Gomez to the rank of Army Captain.
The three men were received at the Presidential Palace yesterday, together with Sports Minister Felipe Payano.
Gomez told Hoy that they spent a month climbing 15 and 20 kilometers a day to adapt their body to the extreme cold in the Himalayas. He said he was at risk of losing several fingers and toes as a result of frostbite caused by temperatures as low as -30 degrees Celsius. He said it took them 12 days to walk the 80kms to reach the first level of the mountain before beginning their ascent (about 15 or 20kms). On the way up, they recalled meeting a Japanese climber who suffered a pulmonary edema.
Gomez said the climb was difficult but satisfying and that the trio plans to climb other mountains through 2013.
