Miss Universe, Mexican Ximena Navarrete, is in Santo Domingo this week for a series of events in support of AIDS prevention.
During her visit she signed an agreement with the governmental Department for the Control of Sexually-Transmitted Diseases and AIDS (DIGECITSS) and the NGO Aidforaids to campaign against the expansion of HIV and AIDS. Also signing the agreement were Dr. Luis Ernesto Felix Baez of DIGECITSS and Jesus Aguais for AidforAids.
The week of activities is sponsored by AID for AIDS Dominican Republic (AFARD). Claudia Messina Olavarrieta, president of the entity, said the program seeks to educate children and teenagers so they can protect themselves and avoid the disease. She said they have campaigned for eight years nationwide. The program also has a medical team that contributes to improving the quality of life of people living with AIDS.
