The Fernandez administration has announced it will hold talks with representatives of business sectors that are likely to be affected by the new taxation proposals that were sent to Congress last week. The new taxation measures seek to compensate for the government's rising fiscal deficit. The government argues that the taxation is necessary to keep economic stability and maintain the Stand-by arrangement with the International Monetary Fund. An IMF mission is in Santo Domingo to complete the fifth and sixth review of the agreement that dates back to November 2009. Economy Minister Temistocles Montas says that the agreement primarily affects the yield of commercial banks that announced RD$20 billion in profits in 2010.

The head of the Catholic Church, Cardinal Nicolas de Jesus Lopez Rodriguez urged the government to implement a serious and effective austerity program to reduce unnecessary spending and the excessive spending exhibited in their personal affairs by government officials. "We are not opposed to the increase or creation of taxes if they are necessary, but they should be kept to a minimum, accompanied by a serious austerity plan," he said as reported in Listin Diario. The Cardinal made these comments while speaking on the occasion of the Santo Domingo Archdiocese's 500th anniversary celebrations.
