PRD presidential candidate, former President Hipolito Mejia has addressed both President Leonel Fernandez, who is also president of the ruling PLD political party, and Miguel Vargas Maldonado, president of the PRD, commenting on the political pact the two had signed in the name of their parties on 30 May 2011. The pact was signed after irregularities in Congress led to an impasse over the requirements for the members of the Electoral Court, the Supreme Court of Justice, and the Constitutional Court.
Mejia urged the politicians to move on the approval of the Political Party Bill, a commitment made in the earlier pact signed between Fernandez and Vargas, known at the time as the Pact of the Blue Ties. He criticized the way that the failure to fulfill that matter has left the PLD and the government with a free hand, able to continue using state resources for the legislative and municipal elections with absolute impunity, leading to a situation where the PRD, despite receiving 41.9% of the vote, did not win a single senate seat.
Mejia said that he accepts the pact providing what is agreed is implemented, institutions are respected, the solemnity and sovereignty of the Judicial Branch is respected, and if the new Constitution and the mechanisms that it establishes for the legitimate choice of the members of the Constitutional Court, the Supreme Court of Justice and the Higher Electoral Court by the National Council of the Magistracy are followed.
