Heavy rains and thunder has been falling in Santo Domingo all day on Monday, causing major flooding in the city known for its inefficient drainage systems. The rains are forecast to continue through Wednesday. Onamet has issued flood warnings for most of the country.
The rain is attributed to a large low-pressure system south of Jamaica that has been stationary into the weekend. The low pressure system has a small chance of developing into a tropical storm during the next 48 hours, according to international weather reports.
The area of disturbed weather is lingering, affecting the Dominican Republic and Jamaica, and extending to Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands.
Flash flood warnings are in effect for most of the country.
