View Full Version : just "showing up" without reservation?

I've coming to north coast for 5 nights arriving this sunday (5/15). I'm flying into (and out of) STI, renting a car... and driving the "Moca/Highway 21" route thru Cabarete to Sosua. And yes, I have good driving directions.
My USA life is SO regimented that I'm thinking of just "showing up" without reservations ANYWHERE.
Maybe I'll drop in to stay at Aventura on Sunday (after a LONG day of travel from Ohio) - then "playing it by ear" the rest of the week.
I was thinking also of dropping in at Rocky's (if I can stand not having AC) and/or Europa (if the daytime heat is killing me). BTW - I have stayed at Rocky's and Europa before, and liked both.
Hell, might even check out Blackbeards one night (never been there - this is my first visit with a rental car).
So my question -- given my dates (May 15-20) -- would I be at serious risk of finding myself "homeless" (without decent, chica-friendly accommodations) if I decided to just "wing it"? Am looking especially for advice from those with the best handle on area hotel occupancy the week in question. Please respond via post here or PM. Thanks.

P.S. - PROMPT replies especially appreciated... since I now have a 5-night ($28/night) reservation at the Europa I may choose to cancel (IF you guys suggest I "wing it").

If you already have reservations you might as well keep it... that seems cheap $28 bucks a night... But you really shouldnt have a problem finding a room... I went Easter weekend and it was totally impossible to find a room in Sosua... I stayed one night at a chicas house cause i was fucked... Memorial day weekend may be the same, But if its a regular week, No holidays then you should be aiiighhht... I did it before and was fine... Never do this on Easter!
I think Blacbeards is full for the forseeable future but they do get cancellations
the eurpoa and $28 a night is a really good rate. no reason to wing it but you'd have litle trouble if you deceided to. lots of hotels with vacancies.
just have fun and enjoy your trip!
i'm at Rocky's during your stay. look me up!

I just got back monday. Most chica friendly hotels are half empty till memorial day weekend. $28 a night is a deal for the Europa. You must be across the way at the guest house which is actually better than the hotel part. Better pool and Security guard for happy hour is easily bribed. If you hotel hop it will probally cost 40 to 50 a night. I drove the Moca road last Saturday and it was actually in great condition. Just watch out for the cows and locals riding burros on the side of the road. Just wish someone else was driving so i could take in the view. The 28 to 1 exchange rate will leave many open rooms next week.

Prompted by ISOC people, I was thinking of turning up without anything booked- is there any problem getting rooms¿?

Most times, no.
Hi,
I am going to DR for the first time, having read most of your posts I thought Europa was guest friendly! Do you still have to bribe the guard there too ?
Also I am trying to book one of their STUDIO guesthouses, the guy who replied to my email said there is a large double bed in the Studio but the photo on their website shows a terribly small bed, anyone knows what the beds are like in the Studio gusthouses in Europa ?

I've never had any problems with the guards at night. there is no problem bringing one chica at a time back to your room as long as she has an ID card (cedula).
If you want to bring two back at once (happy hour!), they charge an extra $15 US each time. It's pretty hard to sneak into the main hotel as you must walk right past the front desk.
Across the street at the guest house, you might want to slip the guard some pesos if you are bringing back two at a time to avoid having to register them and pay the extra $15. However, it sometimes is beneficial to have the chica turn in her cedula at the desk....especially if you anticipate any problems with her.
Diego let me check out a studio in the guest house. It had a full size (Queen) bed. IMO the guesthouse was more run down than the main hotel.
Enjot your trip! And welcome to ISOC!

will be at the europa 10-05 to 10-10 ,,, been there last 3 trips ,,, never had any problem, food is good and it's right near the action ,,, good luck!!
Thanks for the reply ErikS,
So is it the same procedure at the main (street) site ? (And the same with all other hotels - that the chica should leave her ID at the desk ?)
I read that the guesthouse is less luxarious than the main site but I was hoping they are quiter, after all a good night (well, day for us) sleep is essential  .
Sorry for so many questions but Diego stop replying to me when I asked him a question so I am ringing him tomorrow to book and want to know everything now so I can choose and book wisely...

Most Hotels, if they are guest friendly will ask the chica to leave their ID. I have stayed at both and liked the guesthouse because it is quieter. The studio was small and the Bed was awful, but Diego told me they fixed that.

The Europa requires that they leave their ID's at the front desk in the main hotel. I think you are "suppossed" to at the guest house also, but I think the security guard just checks them (if he is awake!).
While there may be less people staying in the guest house, I'm not sure it is that much quiter. It is adjacent to two bars (Dominos & the 4 Roses), plus has a strip club (The Flamingo) literally on top of it.
I've also stayed at Rockies (cheap {$18US} but real basic, i.e. run down. At night, there was never anyone at the desk/bar to check ID's. I think it is a good ID to check ID's though because I understand there can be major legal trouble if you are caught with a chica under 18.
All the hotels I've stayed at in Puerto Plata always checked ID's.
So have fun, but use good judgement. Enjoy!

if you want more than one chica at a time just have a buddy escort her to your room and then he can leave. no charge that way.
we were bringing chicas in and out of the europa and using the pool like we owned the place in May and no one said anything. don't recall the chicas leaving their cedula either but i was drinking!

Great Idea! Another excellent reason for those who routinly trabel alone to make contacts thru ISOC!
I am not too bothered about the extra $ for bringing multiple chicas, I'm not much into that (unless DR changes all that !!!??? )
But which one of the Europa's site should I book then hotel or guesthouse? Considering my criteria :
1- Large comfortable bed
2- Quite
I think everything else is very similar in both sites and not that important to me.
(Unfortunately I need to book for my 3 weeks stay at Sosua because I am coming at the end of Dec. and it runs into Xmas and too risky not to book anything. Although I wish I could just turn up and then change or travel if I feel like it, may be next time....)

Your call, I found some rooms are more quiet than others in the main hotel. The Flamingo is closed and the buildiing in between kept things quiet in the guesthouse. Some rooms are noisy there too I have been told. I liked there are only 17 units in the guesthousae and the pool was better to use. But just let him know you want a quiet room away from the street and you should be ok.
It was at the start of September. JDmine told me he went there and there was one chica and the German owner. They were ahbding out flyers on the beach, but stopped by the end of my trip.

Stayed at the Europa in Sept. Room on the 3rd flr had 2 king size beds.
Quiet as any hotel on the strip. No need to tip the guards.
Electric out max 15 sec at a time.

I'm sure that the Flamingo will open up soon. When I was there last year, it closed...then opened...then closed again within my same two week trip!

Don't think Flamingo is Closed, maybe they are closed some days ? Haven't been there lately, but the light is on, and I have seen people going up and down the stairs there.
