Jose Nunez Melo has become the first Dominican immigrant to be elected to Canada's Parliament last 2 May after receiving 43.2% of the vote. He was sworn in to represent the electoral district of Laval on 2 June. The National Post says that Nunez-Melo ran a hotel in the tourist community of Puerto Plata in his native Dominican Republic before moving to Canada in 1990 with his Canadian wife, where he works in customer service with the Quebec revenue ministry and edits a Montreal Spanish language publication. Nunez joined the New Democratic Party in 2007 and became a candidate for the district of Laval only at the beginning of this year.
