Higher Education Minister Ligia Amada Melo has told reporters that 64% of the students in the nation's 33 universities are women. There is an enrollment of 372,433, as of 2009. She spoke when presenting the General Statistical Report on Higher Education 2006-2009 yesterday.
The Minister said that almost half of all university students in the country attend the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo (UASD) that has branches around the country. There are 43 institutions of higher learning in the DR, most of which are located in Greater Santo Domingo. Of the higher learning centers, 33 are universities, seven specialized institutes and three technical institutes.
Melo said that the most popular degrees are in Accounting, Law, Business Administration, Marketing, Medicine and Psychology.
In 2009 the UASD had an enrollment of 166,296 students.
