The Gregorio Luperon Tourist Highway, the most panoramic, yet oldest of three access roads between Santiago and Puerto Plata suffered a new collapse as part of the roadway was cut off by a landslide as a result of the recent heavy and prolonged rainfall. The torrential rains have caused numerous landslides and washouts in the area, according to Francis Morales, a resident of Yasica. Near the section of Los Mochos de Yasica, part of the mountainside slid down onto the road, cutting off all traffic between the two provinces. Brigades from the surrounding communities began work on removing trees and debris from the landslide but the road could only be made passable again after heavy equipment from Puerto Plata arrived on the scene. The highway has been deteriorating for several years and is nearly useless at times. This latest interruption lasted nearly 24 hours.
