Authorities at the Las Americas International Airport have seized two suitcases packed with sports shoes that turned out to be stuffed with cocaine. The National Drug Control Department (DNCD) said that the suitcases were ticketed to Walter Pitagoras Noesi Gonzalez who was planning to take an Air Europe flight to Madrid. After a regular check, the authorities investigated the shoes assuming that it was not usual that sports shoes be exported to Europe. The traveler, nevertheless, apparently caught on he had been discovered, and was able to escape the authorities, fleeing the airport.
