President Leonel Fernandez held a meeting with most of the PLD ruling party senators and deputies in the Presidential Palace last night. He explained the pressing need to approve the package of tax measures sent to the National Congress to reduce the government's fiscal deficit. The IMF has made it a pre-requisite for approving the fifth and sixth review of its Stand-by arrangement with the DR.
Senate president and PLD secretary general Reinaldo Pared Perez praised the President's explanations. Pared Perez acknowledged that "time is of the essence for the government" and that the passage of the tax bill should happen swiftly. He said that the bill could pass this month.
"Maintenance of the Stand-by arrangement implies maintaining economic stability, which would prevent the value of the currency and inflation from soaring, which is a worry for the current administration," stated Pared Perez.
