The Fernandez administration is arguing that it needs the new taxation increase package to compensate for its growing fiscal deficit. Local analysts point to the government's excessive spending and its lack of priorities as the reason for the fiscal deficit.

El Dia's editorial today makes the point that few Dominicans will question that stability is key, and the lesser evil to breaking with the Stand-by arrangement with the IMF.

"We are all called to defend macro-economic stability, but it cannot be an excuse for justifying everything," writes the editorialist.

"In 2008 and 2009 there were discussions that public spending should be maintained to stimulate the economy that was threatened with stagnation due to the consequences of the global financial, real estate, food and energy crises", says the writer. But at the same time the point was always made that public spending should be an intelligent one.

"We now ask where's the intelligence in announcing an investment of RD$100 million to prepare the Quisqueya Ball Park for the Caribbean Series [in February 2012], or spending RD$400 million more to host games for the World Baseball Classic [2013]?"

"Those are decisions for spending that are not in line with the national economics."
