The National Meteorological Office (Onamet) is forecasting more rain today, but in contrast to the recent downpours it will be weak and moderate in strength. There might be the occasional thunderstorm with strong wind gusts. Rainfall is expected in the northeast, southeast, the Cibao Valley, the central mountains and the frontier regions, becoming lighter on Wednesday, and falling off on Thursday. Onamet continues to monitor the low-pressure area to the south of the Cayman Islands that has a moderate chance of becoming a tropical cyclone. The red, yellow and green warnings issued by the Emergency Operations Center (COE) are still in place.
According to El Nuevo Diario, the COE announced today that over 8,000 people have been sheltered by the national relief agencies, and over 3,000 homes have been flooded or damaged by the winds and rising floodwaters. The COE reiterated that a red alert was still in place for the National District, San Cristobal and Monte Plata and the province of Santo Domingo, as well as a yellow alert for the provinces of Dajabon, Barahona, Independencia, Monsignor Nouel (Bonao), Sanchez Ramirez (Cotui), Duarte (San Francisco de Macoris), Santiago, San Juan de la Maguana, San Jose de Ocoa, La Altagracia (Higuey) and San Pedro de Macoris. Almost all of the other provinces are on green alert. In Haiti more than twenty people have been killed as a result of the rains and flooding.
