Carl Lewis, the legendary 10 times Olympic medalist turned goodwill ambassador for the UN Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) is visiting the DR this weekend. First Lady Margarita Cedeno de Fernandez also shares the prestigious title.

Lewis, who will be in the DR from Friday to Sunday, will visit farming and forestry projects and will meet with children and sports people.

Lewis is best known for being the first man to break 9.9-second barrier in the 100m race, which he achieved at the world championships in Tokyo in 1991.

His agenda also includes a visit to the First Lady's Bosque de los Valores in Haina, 15kms from Santo Domingo's city center. He will also visit the San Cristobal Community Technology Center, a First Lady's Office project. On Sunday, he will be visiting newly forested areas in Bayaguana, Monte Plata province.

On Monday he will travel on to Haiti for visits to schools and sports and farming activities. He will meet with newly elected President Michel Martelly on Tuesday.

The FAO office said that Lewis was visiting Hispaniola in the framework of the International Year of Forests 2011

In April 2011, Lewis announced his plans to run for the New Jersey Senate seat for the Democratic Party.
