The Federation of European Chambers of Commerce in the Dominican Republic (Fedecamaras) awarded Helados Bon president Jesus Moreno Portalatin the title of European Exporter 2010 on behalf of the French-Dominican Chamber of Commerce (CCDF) on Wednesday.

As reported in El Nacional, Moreno won the award for his constant contributions to the development of economic and trade relations between the DR and France. He also is recognized for his successful contributions to the successful Platform for Agro-exports to France that resulted in a recent visit to Paris with 26 companies that belong to the CCDF representing the local farming and agro-industrial sector. The mission is expected to result in increased exports to the demanding French market.

At the same time, Fedecamaras presented the Grupo Vicini with the European Exporter 2010 Award for the most trade with Europe. Grupo Vicini is a member of the British Chamber of Commerce. Kai Schoenhals, president of the Dominican Export Association of the Dominican Republic, received the award on behalf of Juan Vicini, president of the group.

Other companies that won the award were Mataza S.A., a Santiago cigars manufacturer, banana exporters Banama S.A. and Savid, S.A., and Olivieri y Olivieri, manufacturer of artisanal rum for export and Casa del Puro.

The awards were delivered during an event at the Center for Exports & Investments of the Dominican Republic (CEI-RD) attended by the ambassador of the European Union in the country Irene Horej, Industry & Commerce Minister Manuel Garcia Arevalo, European Union National Authorizing Officer Domingo Jimenez, and Eddy Martinez Manzuela, executive director of CEI-RD.

Ilsa Maria Moreno accepted the reward on behalf of her father. She said that the implementation of programs involving sustainable development under this Agro-export platform is a clear endorsement of the business philosophy employed by several generations of the Moreno Family in favor of the country's economic development that are also compatible with environmental conservation.

Also speaking at the event was new Fedecamaras president Bernard Hugeux who representing CCDF expressed his satisfaction that Jesus Moreno had been awarded the award in representation of the Dominican farming sector. He reaffirmed his commitment to exports that at the helm of Fedecamaras so that the country may continue to make the best use of the funding from the European Union under the European Partnership Act.

Furthermore, Henri Hebrard, executive director of CCDF, said that due to the great success of this first Agro-export Platform to France, the initiative would be carried out every two years working in cooperation with the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation to Agriculture (IICA). He forecast an increase of farm exports to Europe, especially in the areas of organic farming and fair trade.

Hebrard said he was working with Jesus Moreno to coordinate a visit by an important mission of buyers from France at the end of the year.

Jesus Moreno is a graduate of the UNPHU business school with an MBA from the University of Quebec (Montreal). He is co-founder of Helados Bon, Bon Agroindustrial and is president of the company. He is known for his commitment to sustainable business solutions with a focus on social and environmental issues. He heads the Quita Espuela Foundation that cares for the largest humid tropical forest on the island. He is also president of the Dominican Environmental Consortium (CAD) of 14 local environmental institutions, president of the Association of Sweets Manufacturers (Asodulce), vice president of the Universidad Agroecologica Fernando Arturo de Merino in Jarabacoa, and assistant treasurer of the French-Dominican Chamber of Commerce.
