According to reports, the Dominican Republic has been successful at putting in place forces to intercept and discourage air drug trafficking operations. The Dominican Air Force has worked in close collaboration with the United States Air Forces Southern (AFSouth, 12th Air Force) units in conjunction with United States Southern Command (Southcom), the Joint Inter-Agency Task Force South (JIATF-S) and the US Department of State to successful eliminate drug import operations by air.

The US government says that the purchase of Super Tucano A-29B fighter aircraft, ground based surveillance radars and command and control operations sectors have improved the tactical arm of the DR Air Force.

"Under the SOUTHCOM/JIATF-S Sovereign Skies initiative, AFSOUTH has provided technical support for radar site surveys and developed tailored Pilot and Ground Control Intercept (GCI) syllabi. In addition, two A-29B (Tucano) pilots and two ground controllers have completed training in Colombia using the AFSOUTH-developed courseware," according to the AFSouth.

Major General Rolando Rosado Mateo, in an interview published on 6 June in Diario Libre, said that air control is no longer the challenge, with efforts now being geared toward maritime controls.

A report in today's Diario Libre highlights the success of what is known as the Sovereign Skies II Operation in deterring illicit air operations.
