Venezuelan capital, fleeing from the Hugo Chavez regime, has been arriving to the Dominican Republic for several years now. It is especially evident in Santo Domingo, with the investment in mega-malls. As reported in Diario Libre, these investments include the construction of the Blue Mall on Winston Churchill Ave. by the Grupo Velutini, Novocentro (Alvaro Gorrin Ramos) on Lope de Vega Ave. and a third under construction on John F. Kennedy Ave. that promotes itself as the largest shopping mall in the Caribbean.
The Central Bank reports that Venezuelan investments in the DR totaled US$140.4 million in 2010, up from US$109.3 million in 2009.
