Migration Department director Jose Ricardo Taveras is working to control migration by children who are forced to beg on city streets. "Now there is a problem with awareness among Dominicans. We urge the community to help us by not giving money to these beggars, because that generates an industry based on the exploitation of these children," he says, as reported in Listin Diario. He said that the department has instated biometric controls to establish the number of Haitians who enter and depart the country. He said that estimates range from 600,000 to two million, because most Haitians are not in the legal system and enter using different trails that cross the dividing mountains.
