Representatives of the Association of Industries of Herrera and the Province of Santo Domingo say that the government would have obtained RD$70 billion if it had controlled public spending, corruption and overvaluation that have milked that amount of money from taxpayers over the past five years. In a statement issued on Sunday, the president of the AEIH, Wadi Cano Acra said that the best option for improving government revenues is the reduction of the government payroll and control of administrative corruption, especially the check of the 40% increase in government procurement costs.

"If one goes that from 2005-2010 the government procured goods and services for RD$177.1 billion, the overvaluation could reach RD$70.8 billion. If that money had been saved, we would not have to be looking at such aggressive measures to cover the fiscal deficit, said Cano. He said that discussions on the new taxation package with government representatives have not included a mention of reduction in government spending and improvement of the quality of spending.

As reported in acento.com.do, Cano said the taxation package would have a negative impact on the financial cost of companies, property investments, productive and commercial investments and job creation.

"We believe that a great service will be done to the country by those who present alternatives that allow the agreement with the International Monetary Fund to continue without an increase in taxation, which in the long term would slow down productive activities, and consequentially reduce tax collections," he said.
