If you get off the plane and you're on your way to the counter for your passport check and submitting your first part of your visa, you will pass a jolly group of musicians. They play authentic merengue tipico and thus give you a taste of what you can expect in the coming holidays. Years ago there the merengue band was always present to receive the holiday makers at the airport with an authentic merengue. In recent years, they were suddenly gone. But now, they are back again, to restore the folk custom. But remember to give the musicians a nice tip, they need the tip because it is their only income.

They added a saxophone and the accordion player is sitting down? Weak!!!

On my recent trip to Punta Cana, I embarrassed my wife by asking for song requests. It quickly became clear that they only knew the same 5 songs. Also, when i asked the guy to break a $20 bill so i could give them $3 tip, the guy pulled out a big bundle of dollars. So even if theyre only working for tips, id guess theyre doing better than most other airport employees.

After forking over the $10 spot for the tourist card, my first dollar out of my pocket goes to these guys. When I was leaving in June, I was the first guy to the departure gates and these guys were just sitting around and bullshitting with each other. I said, "Donde esta la musica?" and right away they all got up and started playing.

Guess they weren't expecting any passengers coming through so soon. They know what the schedule is for all the flights and I was 3+ hours out from my AA boarding time.

I always look forward to the Brugal sample or cubalibre before going through through customs and then seeing these guys as well.

One day we'll fuck around and see the whole band walking up the arrival ramp in JFK laughing and singing all the way to the bank. :).

Let me know when that happens. I'll take them on as clients and they'll perform on the subway for me.
