Definitely good to hear. I like what I hear about the place from a report I was cruising through about the chicas who come thru. Great idea and definitely whoever came up with it should be rewarded by success.

I dunno. Walked by there several times and there weren't too many people in there. Hot barmaids no doubt.

I would always pass this place without giving it a second thought. I never went in there until last month.

I think that a lot of guys once they get on the strip they develop 'tunnel vision' and only want to make a bee-line for Merengue club/Classicos.

I take it this place was sold fairly recently by the U.S. couple from the south (Georgia or Tennessee was it?) who owned it last year? As others have mentioned, this was one of my favorite hangouts last Fall, good place to chill and watch sports. But I did always have the feeling they could have been doing more with the place given the facilities available (i.e., stage and rooms on site).

Ralph has nothing to do with Hideaway....that never worked out. The owner is Paul, a Canadian dude and he owns it solo. 4 barmaids and no chicks dancing on the bar. TV's and loud music.

Tim is gone to the beach...the further the better.

No not permanent. Karl at his Scandanavian Bar a few doors down said Herman went away for a week...called to ask if it was worth coming back, and the answer being no, extended his vacation...

That's part of the problem. No consistency, no identity. I have been in there recently when the barmaids were dressed sexy, engaging the customers and dancing on the bar. Then the next time you go in they are dressed in stretch pants and flip flops. Given the location he has to make it a "destination" place where people want to go. Never going to make it with 3 alcoholic ex-pats sipping beers as your customers.

Maybe part of the problem is the name.........'Hideaway Bar'.

I would see the sign while walking by, look inside and keep on walking. It just never appealed to me to want to go in there.

What he needs is a catchy new name for the bar. I have come up with a suggestion. How about:

'Hot Barmaids Available for Sex Bar'

Now, that is a place I definetly would want to go to :rofl:.

I know he enjoy most of it, especially hanging with the guys, but Don't know if he needs the aggravation of running the bar again, though.

I'm with you on that, Frito. The Shark was always my favorite stop in town to watch any big sporting event. I saw the Final Four there 2 years in a row and it was always a good crowd.

With the NFL season ready to kick off in a few weeks, Lou's would be a great place to catch the Sunday and Monday night games.

Oh, by the way, you can groped in Lou's, too.

A couple of trips ago, on my first night back in Sosua, Lou let in a couple of girls about closing time. I must have had my "first night back in Sosua glow" showing, and one girl walked into the bathroom while I was taking a piss and tried to grab my dick!!!! Maybe he had to go to the DR to reassert his manhood, because he had to do a lot of gay stuff playing that role in the movie. Like blowing the nightwatchman at the construction site, and offering his ass in bed to his gay fireman lover....lol...:lol::lol:

I think a good business niche for the Hideaway is to get some big screen TVs and have a sports bar atmosphere (at least for football and basketball season). Lou's, for the past coupkle of years, was the only place to watch a game in town.

The rest of the year they can show pornos on TV, with naked female bartenders manning the bar...........

One thing NOONE in Sosua seems to have thought of yet, is a TOP LESS bar.. and the hideway is perfect for it, since its not visible from the street at all.
Not Nude, just TOP LESS.. done classy.. and Not a STRIP joint, just topless. And what would be better than a TOP less SPORTS BAR.. with Finger Foods and Nachos...etc
You definitely need the food. and maybe some drink specials to draw them in, but once guys KNOW there are always topless bartenders in there, it will become a regular stop .
No matter how many putas are walking the strip, a TOP less bar would always get me to go in and check out whats happening and get warmed up for the night to come.
And you know the girls would be making Tips like crazy.

I thought of that but, as was pointed out to me, it is located right next to a school and that probably would not fly with the powers in charge or church folk.

Sounds like a great idea until you start looking around. Every other bar has done this in the last year....BIG SCREENS. Rumba, Merengue, Rocky's, Britannia Pub, Scotch and Sirlion, Jolly Roger and even Hideaway. You can't make a living here depending on a few sport fanatics to come and watch the games. People keep mentioning Lou's and how many people went there to watch the game....so why is he closed? Eddies Sports Bar....closed. People go to there favourite bar and watch there favourite sport on whatever tv the bar has....21" tube, 42 LCD or big screen projector. It's about the food and the atmosphere much more than the big screen.

Why do you go to Cabarete? what do they have that the other bars in Sosua don't? the only thing I see different in Cabarete is that Kahuna's has Direct TV which no bar in Sosua has mostly because of the hassle of having the big ass dish. Eddy's Sports Bar has been a mystery to me for years. When I first went down to Sosua, I stopped in. Saw all the wall posters and decorations for various sports teams, the tv's, the large bar and all the room with tables and chairs. I thought that this place was a night time hub.

I never saw more than 3-4 people in there, even at night. I met Eddy a couple of times and he told me that when he owned it, it was a great place to hang out for the night. He sold it to whoever and it never had the same status. Since it is about midway down a residential street and not on a main drag, location could be a major issue for that.

It seems that for the people who live there, once they find a spot or two that they like, that has a nice atmosphere, some chica scenery, good value for food and drink, they stick to going to those same joints, regardless of whether a new place opens. Once the curiosity stage is over with a new spot, if it doesn't measure up to the old tried and true places, it gets passed on by.

If your bar isn't on Pedro Clisante, it seems to be overlooked by most tourist people, no matter how good it is........

No doubt, you need the passing foot traffic to get your place of business in the public eye. There happens to be several bars that I enjoy going to along Alejo Martinez, the Don Andres hotel bar, a couple of small bars down that hill, Spankys and Bar Esperanza, and further down Martinez toward the Coco, there is a Dominican hangout, I think it's called Smitty Sports Bar or something like that, that I stop in. I have even been invited to shoot pool with a group of Dominican guys who were there drinking beer, listening to the music and having a good time. There was always a few chicas at the bar.

And of course the Coco Hotel bar is a cool place. These bars are nice, low key, good value and so forth, but I agree, without a lot of chicas in general, they are normally overlooked by most people. I venture to them to simply take a break from hanging on PC all night.

But, there are some nice girls that stop in these places and with even a small knowledge of spanish, the atmosphere is good for some pleasant conversation and low pressure late night negotiations.

Why do you go to Cabarete? what do they have that the other bars in Sosua don't? the only thing I see different in Cabarete is that Kahuna's has Direct TV which no bar in Sosua has mostly because of the hassle of having the big ass dish. Other than that, the other bars in Cabarete offer the same viewing....no?

O'Sheas has (at least a while ago) a wide range of US/Latin America and European satellite feeds (Dish/Direct and FTA) and other local cable options.

You'll get your game (whatever sport that may be) but enjoy the prices.:icontd:

What party?

I think a lot of people must have missed the announcement because that thread (Hangover (http://news.insearchofchicas.org/forum/showthread.php?348168-The-Hangover2.5-The-Lost-Chapter-Sosua!&highlight=) 2.5 -The-Lost-Chapter-Sosua!) should have blown up.

We've decided that we are going to throw a 40th BIRTHDAY BASH!!!!!

A party like Sosua has NEVER seen. Everyone will be invited. We will start a poll soon to see who all will be coming.

We don't have any details yet about where, but we know the when, so mark the calendars and book your flight!!!!!!

:biggrin::biggrin::biggrin::biggrin: The 5 chicas are all early 20's. All are ''on the menu'' as are the hot barmaids for takeout. There is dancing on the bar and pole dancing in the back of the bar. Negotiate your own prices. Really a great combo of hot chicas and football. In the near future, they will have snacks and bar food.:biggrin::biggrin::biggrin::biggrin:

Congratulations and best of luck to the new owners of Hideaway - Ray, Ira & Steve (I think it's Steve, anyway)!

It's a great spot with a lot of potential that Paul never really seemed interested (or capable) of exploiting, I think it's under much more capable hands now. A legit sports bar on the strip will do very well with the right atmosphere (and by 'right atmosphere', obviously I mean hot young chicas in cheerleader uniforms).

Mr. Smooth
11-05-2011, 03:32 PM
You mean it's been sold again? The last guy had it for what, 6-7 months? Hope it works out for the new owners. I will definitely be back on my next trip down. If they want to make it a sports bar with available chicas, a bit of food and good drink prices, maybe it wil help to fill the void left from the apparent abandonment of the Shark Bar.

Now if someone, or group, who knows what they are doing can buy Pedro McMurphy's and get that joint going, it would bring some added life to Sosua. I think one of the factors with that place, is that there appears to be an either/or deal with the customer base. Either it's a tourist-monger hangout or it's an expat-retired couples hangout. I've noticed that with a few exceptions, each group hangs with themselves and not a lot of mixing.

I know each group is there for different reasons, but an owner who can incorporate a business model that provides solid customer service for both groups will have the best chance to make a go of it.

They need to draw from the folks who live there year round to help get through the low tourist season.

I was on a scout mission yesterday. They are getting a couple of new TVs, NFL package....whatever they need to make a go of it. It being tied to Britana there will definately be bar food on the menu....wings, burgers, pizza, fries ect. As always the issue will be getting the word out and people in the place but it will be a good refuge to have a cold beer and conversation without the music blaring like every other place.

Mr. Smooth
11-05-2011, 07:45 PM
If they are investing in all that, then it should become a great place to hang. I met Ray from the Britannia not long after he took over that place. A good dude and congenial host. Seems to know what he's doing. If he's on board, I think theres an excellent chance it will work out, which would be a boon for both expats and tourists.

I like some bars others hate and vise versa.... Just hope this one has some sort of personality and element of fun and sex...unlike what the previous owner failed at... The personality of the owner and bartenders and a good TV and some good music and a comfortable stool is about all any bar there needs...

The place will sink or swim depending on the girls and the prices the girls are asking, which i'm assuming won't be below 3000 TLN.

Football is nice but its basically once a week for a couple months. That's like 20 days out of the year. They can't expect to survive on that.

They need to give guys a reason to go there when there's really nothing to watch on t.v.

I am betting money this pace makes it.. Ray is involved, thats good enough for me. Hes got a Clue at least on how to treat customers properly and food quality control...
Its hidden so its a nice spot already for some of us who want to get away from the Putas with their hands in our pockets.
That was always an ASSET and a Liab at the same time, just takes the right people to make it work as an asset. Its and awesome location, ISOC guys alone can make it work..Anything they add to it like sports events , food ,and chicas, are just a bonus to me.

The problem is that it is tough to make it with only the ex-pats as your customers. I would much rather sit in a place like the Hideaway and have a few cocktails with other board members and friends. The music is at a level where you can actually talk to each other and I am sure they will play whatever kind of music you want. But most tourists mongers would rather sit at a place like Winner's Circle where the music selection is awful (just my opinion) and is so loud you can't carry on a conversation. I have the same issue with most Dominican places...that fucking loud music.

I don't think the chicas at Winner's Circle have much to do with it as they are not that impressive (again just my opinion) and not available until 3 AM. Plus they are lousy bartenders. I think a lot of it also has to do with being able to see the action on the street, which you can't do at Hideaway. I hope they make a go of it. Ray is a good guy and knows how customer service works.:iconTU:

You just explained why you can't compare the two. Winner's Circle is right on the strip and has its niche. It plays good hip-hop music and not just music, music videos. It's right across from Classico. They don't need to have chicas on call. They've got their customer base.

Hideaway needs to find its niche, its customer base and like you said, it'd better include mongers. Let's see what they come up with. It won't be easy. It's tucked in the back, its dark, they got their work cut out for them. Selling Presidentes 50 pesos cheaper isn't gonna cut it. Mongers wanna see chicks ... especially when they're out at night.

Some of us older guys, want to just chill out and have a drink, without having strange chicas hands constantly grabbing our balls... A place to let your guard down for a little while, yet only steps away from the action.
Sometimes you feel like El Flow,or Rumba, or Merengue, or Winners Circle. And sometimes, you just want to chill and not be bothered, and be able to hear a conversation as Robert and others have said...

Remeber the legendary Cola wars of yesteryear ? Pepsi, Coke etc...

Well, what did 7 Up Do ?, does anyone remember their First AD campaigns, and how they broke in and took a slice out of the Cola drink market ?
Yes, The UN- Cola..
Other good names for this place would have been like, Time out, Sidelines, Halftime. etc..
Thats the theme, its ON PC where the action is, but its also NOT , at the same time... The rest is just decoration, ambiance and nice cold beer and some snacks and finger foods... It dont need nothing else.. Simple.
anyway, thats my .02

Except for the day before and after baseball's All-Star Game, there is a football, baseball or basketball game played every single day of the year. You can look it up! And even during the football season, a game might be on 3 days/nights a week.

But I get what your saying.

For the guy who is a fan, he may want to consentrate for a couple hours on cheering for his team, especially if it is football. To do that in an environment like the refurbished Hideaway only makes it better, even if his team loses. For somebody else, or if a different sport is being played, then maybe it is simply background noise. But a location where you can carry on a conversation, music playing at a decent decible, a game on the big screen, reasonably priced drinks, and eye candy to stir the passions of a man's soul, as well as points south, has the recipe to be a successful venture.

And if those chicas have a vivacious and flirtacious personality, well, who the hell can pass that up?

I will certainly be a customer in March when I get back.

I'll throw in something else.

When I had my place, it was known for a couple of things: one was a very comfortable bar, with the proper padded overhang in front, so your legs would fit underneath, and your arms would be on a padded cushion. Find one of those anywhere in this country.

I also had swivel upholstered bar stools with arm rests. When you'd sit at that bar, you literally didn't want to get up and leave.

I always had free popcorn and peanuts, or something else to munch on. Drinking and munching go hand in hand.

On top of that, I had clean bathrooms. Really clean, with TP, a nice sink and mirror. Nothing fancy, just clean and orderly. An employee would check it every half hour or so, depending on traffic.

In addition, I was an "on hands" owner. I was almost always there, especially on off hours. The guys that came in every day, and tossed down 3-4 cold ones would get one on the house every couple of days. I went out of my way to be friendly to everyone, until they gave me a reason not to. Ya gotta be a shrink in the bar business.

The regulars are the ones that will keep you alive. They're your cash flow during slow periods(and I'm guessing there will be a lot of those)

The difference between football and the rest of those sports is football is really the only 'must see' sport if you're a fan as there's so few games so people are willing to sacrifice 3+ hours of their vacation to watch their favorite team. I doubt too many people are gonna sit and watch a regular season baseball game for 3+ hours when they're in Sosua .. especially at night.

Some of us older guys, want to just chill out and have a drink, without having strange chicas hands constantly grabbing our balls... A place to let your guard down for a little while, yet only steps away from the action.

So the questions that will be answered are:

1) are there enough guys who vacation that want to be away from the "action"

2) is that the place that they want to go to to be away

3) is there enough there to keep them sitting and ordering food/drinks ... if guys just stop in for a beer and bounce, that's not gonna cut it. They need to keep them there. This last part is the whole trick.

I'm sure everyone's rooting for them. Who doesn't want one more option when in town.

A place I like to go to chill and get away from the action is Domino bar, located a little down from the strip just before Scotia bank.

Nice ambiance there, with cute bartenders, a few hookers sitting at the bar who won't molest you (unless you want them to), not too loud music, and low prices for Presidente pequeñas or grandes (Presidente light not served there, though).

A good niche for me would be if Hideaway had hot barmaids that could be pulled for 1000 pesos ST .

But seriously, I think the problem with the Hideaway is location - unfortunately it is located just a few yards outside of that special zone called the 'strip'.

Happy Bar was closed when I was there last month, and I think part of it is because it is "a bar too far". That, and also the lack of tourists due to the downturn in the world economy also contributed to its closing, IMO.

You are dead on with this comment. I passed by this place a few times last year and never walked in the door because of all the chicas on the street. I will definitely check it out next week when I visit.:iconTU:

The place can be alot of fun, no doubt. It probably needs a few more people to stop in and the party will get going some.

A couple of nights on my September trip were awesome. (of course there were several ISOC'ers present which made a difference)

The barmaids were letting go dancing on the bar.

They did a nice remodeling by 3 Italians and now is called Mamajuana Cafe. Nice playful bartenders/hostess with theme nights...no food yet, but they have menus to order from other restaurants. 832308322983228

Gee I wonder where they got that name from?

Might be another lawsuit coming like Jay Z did to David Ortiz lol.

Looks like some prom queen all dressed up and nowhere to go. Can my eyes deceive me, no stools around that bar? Where are the folks? Everything looks set back away from the bar. The bar should be the center of activity, a communal experience. In the pic, everything looks to be away from the what should be the main gathering spot.

Hope it works out for the new owners but if they are contracting out the food to other establishments, I think they are missing out on a main source of revenue for themselves without having an on site kitchen. To make any profit, they would have to price the food offered from the other restaurants at a higher rate than if their customers simply went to the actual restaurant itself.

It was a no brainer when sopranostingray ran that place because the food came from the Britannia across the street where soprano was the owner, so he had the food revenue anyway. I'm sorry he and Ira had to give up on that joint. I missed stopping in when I was there last month. Always liked the place as Coaches Corner.

How many Italian spots does Sosua have now, 5 or 6?

Mama mia!!

So when did Britannia change hands?
The last time I ate there it seemed like food quality had changed alot for the worse.

Maybe I just caught them on a bad day but the pina colada's were not up to the standards I had experienced previously and the fish and chips was so bad (terribly undercooked) that I had to send it back. I almost never send food back but this was not edible. Alot different than before. :icontd:

I just assumed I caught them on a bad day and it is not a sign of the current food quality.
Or maybe it was the new ownership and they don't have things figured out yet.

My last trip in July the place was closed more days than it was open which I took as being low season and they needed a break.

I give this place until February 1 and it will be for sale/rent again, the rent there is not cheap.
If I recall, they are not allowed to open until after school closes next door @ 4PM.
The one thing they have going for them, it is out of the spotlight of the street-passers by, and may not be on the radar screen of the "anti-puta campaign".

I hope their menu includes kiddie cocktails, chicken fingers and pizza. They might also want to include a jungle gym and lego area.

They may make it until May 2014, but by june it will be toast..
I see NOTHING in there that would make me want to go there to spend my drinking dollars .
Unless they bring in a really good CHEF, with some really good food. wtf are they selling in there ?

No offense, but it looks really GAY ... maybe thats the target market.

I like the Dressed up Prom queen with no place to go analogy also...

it's neither stylish nor tacky enough to be gay, it's just lame. like, who plasters the names of drinks on their bar that way? there may be a way to do it that doesn't look half-assed, but they missed it.

problem is, they don't have a kitchen, so can't really bring in a chef. a restaurant is as hard a sell in sosua as a bar anyway, there are just too may other options, what you really need is either an absolutely foolproof way of getting customers in the door, or something special about the place that completely differentiates it from the competition.

personally, i think they should have kept the palapa roof and filled the place with soft white sand and made it into a beach bar. think lax in cabarete. but then again, wtf do i know.

They have stools around the bar. I was in there the other night and enjoyed the place. They are not looking to be a puta bar. It seemed like a decent place to take a chica. They have a small dance floor and play bachata ect. at an acceptable level. Saturday was their grand opening and there were probably 40+ people in there. Couples dancing and the place was relaxed.

But it will be an uphill climb considering the high rent and the fact that there are just not as many people in town. I doubt there will be enough customers to make it work.

Thats a great point, Chalky. The location of that school, talk about a fish out of water situation, I wonder how much the mayor is influenced by that school's location within the tawdry boundary of the main hooker scene, in her quest to revamp Sosua into something different. Having children walking to and from school, looking all dapper in their school uniforms, while some used and abused hooker stands steps away, even though during the daytime, that dicotomy must have some bearing on her wanting to change up Sosua's image.

As Robert posted, the revised Hideaway appears to be the kind of place to bring a lady friend without needing to visit a whore bar for nightlife entertainment. There is room for such a place. The problem is, are there enough customers willing to go there to keep it in business?
