President Leonel Fernandez defended his government's education spending levels during yesterday's inauguration ceremony of the Instituto Politecnico Aragon, a vocational high school in Los Guaricanos, a slum area in northern Santo Domingo.

During the event, Fernandez said that when he began his second term in 2004, the budget for education was RD$15 billion. He said it is now at RD$43 billion. "This means that in seven years there has been a 500% [sic] increase in the education budget," said Fernandez.

The Fernandez administration has been criticized for spending well below the levels established by the Education Law. The Dominican Republic was ranked 136 out of 137 countries in quality of primary education in the latest World Economic Forum Global Competitiveness Report.

The Guaricano high school will serve 1,190 students. It has 16 classrooms, computer lab with 30 computers, science lab, multipurpose hall for 400 people, a library for 200 people, and two sports courts.

The center was built at a cost of more than RD$150 million, says the government. The Spanish International Development Cooperation Agency contributed RD$38.5 million and the Autonomous Government of the Spanish region of Aragon another RD$33 million. The land was donated by the Archbishop of Santo Domingo.
