The Ministry of Public Health has announced the start of a new campaign to encourage breast-feeding among Dominican mothers. As reported in Listin Diario, the Dominican Republic has one of the lowest exclusive breast-feeding levels in Latin America and the Caribbean, at 7.8% of mothers. The campaign is being sponsored by Unicef, the Ministry of Public Health and the National Breastfeeding Commission. The campaign seeks to get fathers to encourage their wives to breastfeed exclusively for the first six months of the baby's life. The new campaign, "Breastfeeding: the best way to ensure the life of your baby" seeks to highlight the benefits for baby, mother and family budget.

Clavel Sanchez, coordinator of the National Breastfeeding Commission, introduced the campaign yesterday at an event with Unicef representative Maria Jesus Conde, deputy minister of Health Jose Rodriguez Aybar, Pan-American Health Organization (PAHO) representative Lilian Renau-Vernon, and Priscilla Stothers of the La Leche League International.

The goal is to reach out to 100,000 pregnant women and their families through six hospitals that are included in a first phase, with face-to-face talks with 200,000 families in the National District, the province of Santo Domingo, San Pedro de Macoris, Santiago, La Vega, San Francisco de Macoris and the border provinces.
