The Coalition for an Independent and Transparent Justice is calling for the selection of judges who will serve in the higher courts by the National Judicial Council (CNM) to be carried out with transparency.

At a press conference in the Conference Room of the National Association of Young Entrepreneurs (Anje), Francisco Alvarez, Samir Chami Isa, Mary Fernandez, Guerrero and Lara Perdomo Nassef, criticized the fact that the first work session of the CNM held last Thursday was held behind closed doors. The Coalition representatives say this attitude undermines the transparency of the process of evaluating and selecting judges who will make up the high courts.

They are urging that the selection process of the judges for the Supreme Court of Justice, the Supreme Electoral Court and the Constitutional Court should be open and televised to prevent political partisanship to prevail in the selection of the judges, to prevent the judiciary from being kidnapped to defend the interests of the party members, as reported in El Caribe.

They criticized the first work session because the ruling to apply the Fundamental Law of the National Judicial Council to serve as the basis for the selection of the important judges was not made public.

The Coalition is made up by civil society groups Institutionalism and Justice Foundation and Citizen Participation, and business associations the National Association of Young Entrepreneurs (ANJE) and the American Chamber of Commerce.

"As an institution what we seek is transparency and openness in this process to prevent the high courts from being shuffled among the political parties," stated Participacion Ciudadana coordinator Samir Chami Isa.

He said that the people who will be chosen for the courts should respond to the interests of the Dominican people and not the interests of the political parties.
