The government is installing small-scale hydro-generation systems to bring power to rural areas, as reported in Listin Diario. The renewable energy micro generators reduce pollution and local dependence on petroleum. The DR currently has an installed capacity for 523.2 megawatts in hydro generation, or 12% of all electricity produced in the country a year, according to data from the National Energy Commission (CNE). Work is under way to increase this capacity.
The Public Electricity Corporation (CDEEE) Rural Electrification Unit is building 31 micro-hydro systems with the support of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP). Of the total, 16 are already in operation, with an investment of RD$157 million, and another 14 in planning phases, involving an additional investment of RD$238 million.
The program is partly funded by UNDP Global Environment Facility (GEF) Small Grants Program. Program coordinator Alberto Sanchez said it brings renewable and low-cost power to poor communities in the country. The program encourages communities that benefit from the mini hydro power plants to set up cooperatives where residents contribute an affordable fee to a fund that will cover the cost of any damage that occurs to hydropower systems.
Micro-hydroelectric plants in the Dominican Republic are located at: La Majagua, Monteplata, Los Naranjales in San Jose de Ocoa, El Recodo in Azua, El Jengibre in Santiago Rodriguez, Piedra de los Veganos in Monsenor Nouel, El Paso de la Perra, Angostura and El Dulce in La Vega, Jarabacoa and Fondo Grande in Dajabon.
