The Dominican Republic has been self-sufficient in rice production for the past six years, El Caribe reports today. Rice is the main food staple in the Dominican Republic. An estimated 9.5 million quintals of rice are consumed every year. This means each individual consumes 52 kilos or about 114 pounds. There is a permanent reserve of five million quintals in stock and the current production level is 12.5 million quintals. El Caribe reminds readers that the father of the rice industry in the DR is Yin Tieh Hsieh from Taiwan, who came to the country in 1965 in charge of the China Technical Farm Mission.
