26-year old Leidy Jimenez made the front page of El Caribe for shaving her long black hair in an expression of solidarity with Venezuela President Hugo Chavez, who is suffering from cancer. She joined a group of nine others who shaved off their hair at the Embassy of Venezuela in an expression of solidarity.
"President Chavez has been very supportive of our country, with have a debt to that nation and this is the way we can express our appreciation," said Rafael Guillen Beltre, coordinator of Paz Dominicana, the social peace movement that assembled the group. He said that President Chavez needs the prayers of Venezuelans and Latin Americans for his recovery.
Jimenez was the only woman in the group. "I think that a person such as Hugo Rafael Chavez Frias deserves an effort of love and it is an honor for me to offer my hair," she said with tears of emotion.
Others were Alexander Pineda, Julio Peguero, Angel Rodriguez, Rafael Abreu, Hector Carvajal, Jose Guillermo, Javier Abreu, Felipe Carvajal and Rafael Guillen.
The Venezuelan ambassador expressed his satisfaction towards the act of solidarity. "We are convinced that this act will strengthen the health of President Chavez," said ambassador Alfredo Murgas.
