The Dominican Republic National Basketball Team returned to the DR after weeks training in Kentucky to train at the Palacio de los Deportes. Today, Friday, 19 August the team travels to Brazil to play in the Copa Tuto Marchand, in Foz de Iguazu, from 24-26 August against Brazil, Canada and Puerto Rico.
The Brazil tournament is a warm-up for the FIBA Tournament of the Americas on 30 August-11 September in Mar de Plata, Argentina. This tournament will decide which two teams get a slot into the 2012 London Olympics. The Dominican Republic National Basketball Team is working to be one of them.
In the FIBA tournament, the DR will compete in Group A together with Brazil, Canada, Venezuela and Cuba. Playing in Group B are Puerto Rico, Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay and Panama.
Dominican team players are Eulis Baez, Luis Flores, Manuel Fortuna, Francisco Garcia, Manuel Guzman, Al Horford, Kelvin Pena, Jack Michael Martinez, Juan Pablo Montas, Orlando Sanchez, Ronald Ramon, Edgar Sosa, Ricardo Soliver, Eloy Vargas and Charlie Villanueva.
The Dominican team is managed by a private company, Southgate Sports, represented by Eduardo Najri that has secured sponsorship and is behind the contracting of John Calipari from the University of Kentucky to coach the team.
