On a serious note, I watched NBC Nightly News, tonight, which said that Irene will be a Categorgory 1 hurricane, with 75 mph winds, when it hits the east coast of Hispaniola on Monday evening. It will hit Sosua area in the early a.m. hours on Tuesday.

I guess this might be a reason for me to stay another day in SD. Don't want to travel long distance in a hurricane in DR. I did that already and the rental car people weren't happy when I bought back my SUV. There was so much water on the floor it looked liked I used it as a submarine.

I would've done it the other way around...left SD a day earlier. I'd rather be on the north coast when the storm hits.

Hurricane Irene heads toward Hispaniola and US
SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) — Hurricane Irene cut power to more than a million people in Puerto Rico, downing trees and flooding streets on Monday, and forecasters warned it could be a major storm as it threatens Florida and South Carolina by the end of the week.
There were no reports of deaths of major injuries in Puerto Rico, but Gov. Luis Fortuno declared a state of emergency and urged people to stay indoors to avoid downed power lines, flooded streets and other hazards.
"This isn't the time to go out to find out what happened ... This is the time stay in your homes," Fortuno said at a news conference.
The first hurricane of the Atlantic storm season posed an immediate threat to the northeastern coast of the Dominican Republic, though the center of the hurricane was expected to miss neighboring Haiti, which shares the island of Hispaniola. Nearly 600,000 Haitians are still homeless due to the January 2010 earthquake and that country could still see heavy rain and tropical-storm-force winds, said Dennis Feltgen, a spokesman for the U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami.
"We don't expect to this to get ripped up over the mountains of Hispaniola," Feltgen said. "We expect it to remain a hurricane."
The U.S. National Hurricane Center projected that Irene could grow into a Category 3 hurricane with winds of 115 mph (184 kph) over the Bahamas on Thursday. And it may carry that force northwest along Florida's Atlantic coast and toward a possible strike on South Carolina, though the forecasters warned that by the weekend, the storm's path could vary significantly from the current projection.
A hurricane warning was issued Monday for the Turks and Caicos Islands and the southeastern Bahamas.
Authorities in Palm Beach County directed staffers to stop routine operations Monday and switch to storm preparations, including checks on generators and communications equipment.
"Hurricane preparations are pretty much the order of the day," said Mike Geier, radiological emergency preparedness planner. "We go through a pretty extensive checklist. It's probably three pages long."
Officials in Charleston, South Carolina, warned residents to monitor Irene closely. It has been six years since a hurricane hit the South Carolina coast, said Joe Farmer of the state Emergency Management Division.
Hurricane Irene centered about 70 miles (115 kilometers) northeast of Punta Cana, Dominican Republic late Monday morning and it was moving toward the west-northwest at 13 mph (20 kph). It had maximum sustained winds of about 80 mph (130 kph), the Hurricane Center reported.
In Puerto Rico, crews were out clearing streets and assessing the damage but the governor and other officials gave no indication when power would be restored. Schools, most government offices and many businesses remained closed. Flights were expected to resume at the international airport in San Juan by midmorning.
Dozens of people in San Juan sought emergency shelter ahead of Irene and authorities evacuated 150 tourists from the outlying islands of Culebra and Vieques as the storm approached.
The storm entered through the southeast coastal town of Humacao, but emergency management regional director Orlando Diaz said the damage seemed to be less than he feared.
"We thought things were going to be a bit more tragic," he said. "I was surprised that we didn't see the amount of rain I expected."
Irene had previously churned through St. Croix in the U.S. Virgin Islands, where more than half of the inhabitants are still without power, said Christine Lett, emergency management spokeswoman.
In the Dominican Republic, officials assured residents they had food available for 1.5 million people if needed. Also, soldiers and emergency management crews evacuated dozens of residents from high-risk areas along the southern coast.
"We have taken all precautions," presidential spokesman Rafael Nunez said.
Many stores in the capital of Santo Domingo closed Sunday even as people bought last-minute items like flashlights.
The international airport and others remained open late Monday morning, although dozens of flights had been canceled.
Irene is expected to lash the northeastern region of the Dominican Republic for up to 15 hours, local meteorologist Miguel Campusano said.
In the popular tourist city of Punta Cana, emergency crews prepared for the storm but have not taken any special measures, said Candy Gomez, spokeswoman for the Punta Cana resort.
The Hurricane Center said the main impediment to the storm's progress over the next couple of days will be interaction with land. If Irene passes over Hispaniola's mountains or over parts of eastern Cuba, the storm could weaken more than currently expected.
"However, if the system ends up moving to the north of both of those land masses it could strengthen more than expected," wrote forecaster Richard Pasch.

Hurricane Irene picked up strength as it moved toward the southeastern Bahamas, snarling air traffic in the U.S. and Caribbean on a path that may take it to South Carolina (http://topics.bloomberg.com/south-carolina/) by week’s end, according to the National Hurricane Center.
Irene, with maximum winds of 80 miles (129 kilometers) per hour, up from 75 earlier today, was about 105 miles west- northwest of San Juan, Puerto Rico, as of 11 a.m. East Coast time and moving west-northwest at 13 mph, according to an advisory (http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/text/refresh/MIATCPAT4+shtml/221053.shtml?) from the Miami-based center.
“The official forecast calls for intensification and makes Irene a Category 3 hurricane as it moves across the central Bahamas,” according to a center analysis. “Irene is becoming a large cyclone.”
The current track forecast (http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/refresh/graphics_at4+shtml/145813.shtml?5-daynl#contents) predicts Irene will hug the eastern Florida (http://topics.bloomberg.com/florida/) coast and make landfall in South Carolina on Aug. 27 as at least a Category 3 hurricane, which is considered a major storm. The last major hurricane to hit the U.S. was Hurricane Wilma in 2005. With winds of at least 111 mph, “devastating damage will occur” at landfall, according to the hurricane center.
“We definitely think it’ll make landfall in the southeastern part of the U.S.,” said Kristina Pydynowski, a meteorologist with State College (http://topics.bloomberg.com/state-college/), Pennsylvania-based AccuWeather Inc.
Florida Threat Eases
Earlier today, forecasters thought the storm was heading to Florida. However, as they receive more information “the current guidance lessens the threat to south Florida,” according to the hurricane center.
The center expects the hurricane to pass just north of Hispaniola, home to Haiti (http://topics.bloomberg.com/haiti/) and the Dominican Republic, later today. Irene will veer northward over the next few days, taking it across the Bahamas by Aug. 25 and the east coast of Florida the next day, the center said.
American Airlines (http://topics.bloomberg.com/american-airlines/) and its American Eagle regional carrier, along with JetBlue Airways Corp. and US Airways Group Inc., canceled a total of 124 flights today between the U.S. and the Caribbean, as well as among the islands themselves, according to spokesmen for the companies.
Florida’s orange crop is vulnerable to tropical weather if the area is exposed to strong winds. Orange-juice prices have climbed 20 percent from a year earlier as frost and dry weather hurt the Florida crop. Futures for November delivery closed at $1.6415 a pound on ICE Futures U.S. in New York (http://topics.bloomberg.com/new-york/) last week.
Watching Groves
“It’s a bit of a wait-and-see at this point in time. We need to get a couple days nearer to see what the damage is going to be” to the crop, Jim Dale, senior risk meteorologist at British Weather Services at High Wycombe, England (http://topics.bloomberg.com/england/), said by phone.
A hurricane warning in Puerto Rico has been changed to a tropical storm warning. Hurricane warnings have been issued for the north coast of the Dominican Republic and the southwest Bahamas and the Turks and Caicos Islands, while watches are in force for the north coast of Haiti. Warnings are issued for areas where hurricane-force winds are expected in the coming 36 hours and a watch is issued when there is a possibility of hurricane-force winds in the coming 48 hours.
Tropical storm warnings for the U.S. and British Virgin Islands have been dropped.
Wind Field
Hurricane-force winds (http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/text/refresh/MIAPWSAT4+shtml/221504.shtml?) extend outward for 30 miles from Irene’s core, twice as far as earlier today, and tropical-storm- force winds extend for 185 miles, the center said in its advisory.
The storm may drop 5 to 10 inches (13 to 26 centimeters) of rain across Puerto Rico (http://topics.bloomberg.com/puerto-rico/), the Virgin Islands, the Dominican Republic, Haiti, the southeastern Bahamas and the Turks and Caicos, with as much as 20 inches in some areas and “life- threatening flash floods,” the hurricane center said.
The storm probably won’t enter the Gulf of Mexico (http://topics.bloomberg.com/gulf-of-mexico/), home to 31 percent of U.S. oil output and 7 percent of natural gas.
“It looks like most of the models are looking somewhere along the east coast from Florida up to North Carolina (http://topics.bloomberg.com/north-carolina/),” said Travis Hartman, meteorologist with MDA EarthSat Weather in Gaithersburg, Maryland (http://topics.bloomberg.com/maryland/). “As far as energy purposes it looks like the Gulf is going to get away from this one.”
A storm becomes a hurricane when winds hit 74 mph. The last hurricane to hit the U.S. was Ike in 2008, which was a Category 2 storm on the five-step Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale when it went ashore near Galveston, Texas (http://topics.bloomberg.com/texas/).
Farther to the west, Tropical Depression Harvey dissipated over southern Mexico (http://topics.bloomberg.com/mexico/), the hurricane center said.

nope, but this thing looks like the heart of the storm is heading straight for Turks & Caicos & the Bahamas.
I don't understand how those islands get through it, they're small, low-lying islands so hurricanes roll right over them and they seem to be in dead center of the path of every single one.

At 2:00pm here in Puerto Plata it's overcast and ranges from spitting to light rain. Some gusts of wind earlier but hardly any right now. I don't think we have anything to worry about.
Been living here since 1992 and we have had more problems in the rainy season (January) from flooding in the low areas than in the hurricane season.

Some of those guys are nuts, checking the weather all over the globe, and then when they see a storm brewing hopping on a flight to that location, searching for the biggest and baddest waves, and the strongest and most violent wind.

have you ever seen the movie "Riding Giants" (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0389326/)? It's pretty awesome if you have even a vague interest in surfing, but hitting the 30-40 footers isn't enough, they have to find the biggest beast they can. Reminds me of Point Break with Keanu Reeves and Patrick Swazy, just saw it again the other night on cable.

Forecasters are now talking about NYC taking a direct hit, yo.
A direct hit by what? On the news they're playing it up as if it'll still be a Cat2 hurricane, but in reality - by the time it gets this far north it probably won't be anything more than a low-level tropical storm.
NOAA data shows about a 30% chance of the NYC area getting hit by tropical storm level winds (sustained winds of 39mph or more) and the odds of even Cat1 level hurricane winds at between 0 and 5%.

The "news" has been nothing more thant ENTERTAINMENT for a LONG TIME..
and if you go by their info, you are a Fool and a Consuming Fool at that.
Yes, lets all RUN to the STORES, & empty tall he Shelves.. Buy all the water , Milk & Bread you can, or your family will starve. And make sure you go to home Depot and buy a $ 500 Generator , cases of batteries and 5 flashlights, while you are at it.
I LITERALLY just this evening observed a group of ladies trying to CLEAN out Home depot of The bottled WATER they had for like $3.97 a case.
They must have taken out 5 shopping carts of cases of water. filled a whole SUV..
WTF is wrong with people ?
The funny thing is this is the exact same shit I used to see in NC, when there was a forecast of 1-2 " of snow.. Which is where I realized how stupid people really can get.

So what exactly did the storm do in the D.R.? Any real damage anywhere? I haven't heard anything, seen a weather report, or been to any sites.

You guys can sleep on Irene if you want, but I wouldn't, I believe this one is going to be pretty bad, you got high tide set to hit at the same time as the storm is supposed to hit NYC. You guys can think it's funny all you want, and that the weather man is just trying to panic you, but with all the shit that's been happening this year all over the planet, I wouldn't doubt this one in the least. Time will tell we shall know in a few days, but nothing wrong in being prepared for the worst, and if it ain't that bad just adjust, but if you prepare for the least or not at all, and it is what they say, you are seriously fucked my friends.
I bet all those motherfuckers in Missouri and Alabama didn't expect those tornadoes either, I bet those folks surrounding the Mississippi didn't expect floods like that for weeks, doubt they expected that earthquake and subsequent Tsunami in Japan, keep on joking and doubting, just hope the joke ain't on you.
This weather shit ain't no joke.

You got that right!
I didn't expect the earthquake in Haiti when I was in Sosúa (tremors). I was resting in my bed in my hotel room when the whole building started to sway.......WTF. I was on the 3rd floor and decided I better get the fuck out of the building. But it was over in like 5 seconds.
I didn't realize the extent of the devastation of the earthquake until I saw the news on CNN on one of the TV's in Merengue later that night. And then there was a tsunami alert for that part of the Caribbean.

went through Miami yesterday, on my way to Santo Domigo. No problems whatsoever.
Lots of other flights were cancelled though. One big reason for that is if a plane gets grounded somewhere else it screws up its scheduled flights for the rest of the day.

Yeah the whole mass transit system shut down for the first time in history in NYC, the storm has been reduced to a cat 1, but I think they are worried about flooding with the high tide and all.

As Irene bears down on all of you, keep it real the tonight and tomorrow and heed the warnings that are given. No matter if it is just hype and she turns out to be just another nor'easter, I hope everyone the best through all of this and looking forward to all the great and fun posts come Monday from all of you.
Have a safe night all

Where do you live, Hunter?
I live northwest of Washington, DC, and Irene isn't too bad here but I don't take this storm to be a "pussy". We started getting its effects this morning, and at 22:00 EDT the storm is beating up my bushes. (The eye is still 150 miles southeast of my home.) We are getting winds in the 50-knot range, and as I said I'm well inland and reasonably far from the storm track.
Halcyon, my "new" sailboat, was pulled out of the water yesterday. She's well above the flood line of the last hurricane-level storm we had in the marina. I hope her neighbors, still in the water, survive the storm - but some of the nearby boats have pretty badly worn dock lines, and one of them may be in my boat's slip (and battered) when I get back to the dock ... about Wednesday, I hope.
Maybe the fact that I have a boat too big & heavy for a trailer is affecting the way I judge Hurricane Irene. And we can tease about the people overloading their SUVs with bottled water, all we want. I have a few gallons of bottled water for myself, just in case - but if I don't need it at home I'll use it on the boat later. Same for the extra flashlight/radio batteries I bought yesterday.
I don't believe I overdid it or ran a Chicken Little on the storm. No doubt, some people have done so.
I DO want to say, here and "officially," that Robert13212 was extremely unkind to bring Irene with him from the DomRep this week.

Oh, yeah, that's understood. Connecticut sticks out into the Atlantic enough that you actually may get more out of it than I've gotten ... so far.
My major hope is that the power grid won't be disrupted by the storm. So far so good. My only regret is that I didn't fix myself a two-quart pitcher of the "Hurricane" cocktail - I've got several pouches of Pat O'Brien's Hurricane mix.... oh well.

Well it's almost midnight. Here in north Jersey we've had steady hard rain, but little wind so far. They sat that it will kick up around 2 AM andthat the eye will pass this far north around 8.
As for the hype, I do belive that this could be serious. They have no way of knowing if the storm will turn in land and weaken or ride the coast and keep drawing strength from the ocean.
It's a good idea to be prepared, but many people take it to the extreme. I saw a woman at costco with 40 gallons of water. Asked her if she was loading in the animals two by two.
OTOH, if the water supply does get compomised I'll be happy to have a couple of gallons of water, Iced Tea and two six packs to get through. If the water is good I'll still drink th erest over the next week or so.
Any one catch the idiot Glen Beck when he said the hurricane is a blessing because it will teach people to be prepared?

Watching a little bit of news, and seeing quite a bit of flooding in Long Beach, I used to live there on Broadway which was right next to the boardwalk, lived there for a few years before I got married, Long Beach was a fun town back in the day for a single guy. During that time only once remember any significance flooding on Broadway, based on what I am seeing on the news this flooding is worse than anything I experienced while I lived there, it's already gone quite a few blocks past Broadway which is significant.

No, and it reinforces my feelings that the "glass teat" is the lowest common denominator of Western civilization. The idiot box, of idiots, by idiots, for idiots.

Now the next question is; is if the new idiot box is the computer w/ internet??
Hope all are doing ok after the storm and those who might still be going through it.
One good thing about living in the city. Power is less likely to go out ( most of the lines are under ground). My lights flickered but never went out. I have some roof damage but that's about it. Some neighbor didn't fare as well, bricks fell off the front facade. I guess that earth quake and two days of heavy rain and wind didn't help.
I was also happy to received a couple of calls from some RD chicas to see if I was alright.

Had to cancel my trip to POP this Saturday (my choice) and not happy. BUT, the house survived any damage, and it would piss me off to no end to head down to POP and come back and find most of my shit missing.

I'm blown away by the affect a Tropical storm had. I can't imagine what we'd be going through had it remained a CAT 2 or 3 storm.
I came home from work yesterday and was surprised to find the electricity on. The only thing upsetting was that I had just purchased a generator the day before.
Now the focus is on getting the okay from work to reschedule another trip down to POP.
But, yeah Donaldo66, bank that money and party your ass off when you do make it down to the DR.
