President Leonel Fernandez met with the Emergency Operations Center (COE) yesterday in preparation for Hurricane Irene hitting the Dominican Republic. The storm is expected to affect mainly the northeastern and northern coasts with heavy rains, wind gusts and high wave surge.
Shortly after, the Ministry of Education cancelled school nationwide this Monday and announced preventive evacuations. On Saturday, the Dominican government issued the first hurricane warnings for the entire Dominican coastline, as first reported in El Nacional on Sunday. For many private schools it would have been the first day of classes. Public schools reopened on 17 August.
As part of the preventive measures, the government announced the opening of 2,264 shelters. Some 1,250,000 uncooked meals will be prepared, in addition to 1,250,000 cooked rations.
Presidential spokesman Rafael Nunez announced yesterday that some 14 provinces are on red alert, and the rest of the country is on yellow alert. He encouraged all to follow the updates provided by the media. For real time updates on the progress of the storm, follow
