Today's Hoy newspaper publishes the results of its 11-15 August poll with nine months to go before the 20 May presidential election. Voters showed a 47.9% preference for Mejia, compared to 33.4% for the PLD candidate, Danilo Medina. Some 1,200 men and women eligible to vote were polled. The margin of error of the poll is 2.4% plus or minus.

The poll showed that voters who identified themselves as PRSC supporters, traditionally the third party and a strong ally of President Leonel Fernandez, showed a 24.7% preference for Mejia compared to 17.8% that said they would vote for Medina.

Mejia is also strong in low-income groups, where a preference of 50.4% against 33.5% for Medina was identified by the poll.

Mejia also has greater support among voters between the ages of 18-24 who did not experience the 2000-2004 government. 57% of those in that age group identified with Mejia as the next President, compared to 27.8% for Medina.

According to the poll, preference for other candidates is as follows:

PRSC pre-candidates were rated as:

Amable Aristy 3.5%, Ito Bisono 1.7% and Carlos Morales Troncoso 2%. Osiris de Leon, Frank Martinez and Ricardo Espaillat under 1% each.

Independent candidates: Guillermo Moreno received 2.4%, Eduardo Estrella, 1.8% and Pelegrin Castillo, Julian Serulle and Max Puig have less than 1% each.
