Industry & Commerce Minister Manuel Garcia Arevalo has defended the high cost of fuel in the Dominican Republic on the grounds that the price of a barrel of petrol was up almost US$4 last week and is at US$88 per barrel. He defended the Ministry's application of the formula included in the law. He said that the costs are calculated based on the FOB price of petroleum, the indexation and the intermediary costs. He said that while the price of a barrel of petroleum is used as a reference, the actual prices are based on final products. "In many cases petrol is down, but fuel does not drop in the same proportion," he commented.

He said that the prices for the week 20-26 August are up, and these are:

Premium gasoline: RD$230.40

Regular gasoline RD$213

Premium diesel RD$193.90

Regular diesel RD$187.40

Avtur RD$153.18

Propane RD$105.70
