Unsuspecting pedestrians in middle-class and upscale residential areas are being surprised by speeding motorized assailants who pull up and grab bags and necklaces off their victims. Hoy reports that residents and people working in Claret, Jardines del Norte, Los Proceres, Los Prados and Julieta in Santo Domingo have made multiple complaints. The newspaper says that people are calling on the authorities to exercise preventive measures to put a stop to the practice that is increasing as the assailants are allowed a free hand.
Hoy reports that in three barrios alone there have been at least 25 robberies in less than a month. Most robbery victims do not report the incident.
