One of the country's most famous cigar manufacturers, Arturo Fuente, lost two of its tobacco warehouses in Palmar Abajo in Villa Gonzalez early this morning. Efforts to fight the fire were impeded by a noticeable lack of equipment in the small town and the slow response from neighboring departments in Santiago and Navarrete. According to local Fire Chief Winston Toribio, the units from the Pisano Free Zone did not respond to the call for help that was requested. With the roof of one warehouse already collapsed, the firefighters are trying to cool off a 2,500-gallon fuel tank filled with diesel oil. The report was carried on www.elsoldesantiago.com (http://www.elsoldesantiago.com). The Fuente Cigar Factory is the maker of perhaps one of the most famous cigars in history, the Fuente Opus X, as well as the whole line of Fuente cigars and the well-known Ashton brand. Fuente employs several thousand people in its factories and warehouses as well as its large farms in the Bonao area, where they sponsor a school for the children of the area.
