The judge for Permanent Attention of the National District, Jose Alejandro Vargas, has ordered one year's preventive custody for Navy Captain Francisco del Rosario Diaz Rodriguez and Navy Lieutenant Hector Soto, as well as Army Sergeant Kelvin Leoclides Recio Novas and a civilian, Marino Valdez Gomez, who are accused of kidnapping two Italian women and attempting to rob them of RD$20 million in certificates of deposits. The coercive measure was requested by the Assistant District Attorney, Dante Castillo Medina, who listed the facts and the risks posed by releasing the accused.

Diario Libre reports that the Justice Department has evidence that links the group to the kidnapping of Bruna Giri and her daughter Michela, which occurred on the morning of 18 August. The prosecutors said that the statements by Michela amounted to evidence that incriminates the defendants. Bruna Giri said that they were on Street III, Torre Iania, of the National District, when del Rosario Diaz, accompanied by Valdez Gomez, Soto y Recio Novas appeared. The men immediately closed in on Bruna and Michela, telling them that it was a kidnapping.

They also started asking them about some certificates of deposit, valued at RD$20 million, and forced Bruna to get her car keys. Three of the men took her in the car while del Rosario Diaz took Michela in another vehicle, driving towards Sarasota Avenue. She said that they went to a bank branch on Lope de Vega Avenue, where she (Michela) was obliged to ask the manager if he could give her RD$1 million. The District Attorney said that the manager noticed that the young woman was nervous, and called security, whereby the accused noticed that they had been discovered and fled with the other defendants, but Valdez Gomez was caught in flagrante delicto. The others took Bruna Giri with her vehicle, which they abandoned near Winston Churchill Avenue.

Defense lawyers for the accused, Jose Fernando Perez Volquez, Manuela Ramirez and Adolfo Serrano asked the judge to release the accused on their own recognizance. However, Assistant District Attorney Dante Castillo Medina described the kidnapping as a grievous crime and said that the District Attorney has evidence that seriously implicates the accused. Bruna Giri and Michela Giri have also filed civil lawsuits in the case, and hired Carlos Balcacer to represent them.
