Dominican Migration department director Jose Ricardo Taveras complained on Tuesday that the international community is not fulfilling its role in the control of illegal immigration from Haiti across the frontier to the Dominican Republic. El Nuevo Diario says that Taveras criticized the United Nations has troops in Haiti for being on what he described as "a permanent vacation." During an interview at the Presidential Palace the official also criticized the international community for not investing anything in infrastructure, education, crime fighting, or in the care of the frontier in Haiti, leaving the Dominican authorities to control the illegal human trafficking across the border alone.
Taveras said: "We do not have anyone to talk to on the other side, because Minustah does not intervene in the trafficking of persons, and they have the UN mandate to do so".
Taveras said that the international community was using Haiti to pose for photo opportunities, because no money was arriving in Haiti and Haiti needs investments.
He called on the Ministry of Foreign Relations, the Armed Forces and society in general to intervene in the problem of the illegal migrations.
