Inflation or the rising cost of living (63.4%), crime (42.2%) and unemployment (40.5%) continue to be the leading problems that Dominicans would like to see resolved. With marked improvements in the reliability of power services (38.2%), blackouts have fallen to fourth place. Drug trafficking is listed by 20.8% as a major problem, followed by 17.8% for government corruption, according to the August Gallup poll commissioned by Hoy newspaper. Eight of every 10 Dominicans said that things are on the wrong path for the Dominican Republic, and half of the population is pessimistic about any improvements. The poll was conducted between 11 and 15 August and 1,200 possible voters were polled nationwide. Only 16% said that the country was on the right track. 62% of those who favor the ruling PLD party want to see a change of course.

Despite high levels of political patronage, when voters were asked for the political party of their preference, the answers were: PRD (41.4%), PLD 36.4%, PRSC 6.1% and others 13.1%. Of those giving their party preference, 52.4% said they had no active participation in party politics.

80% of those polled think the elections will come down to a contest between two political parties n namely between former President Hipolito Mejia (PRD) and Danilo Medina of the PLD.

The poll also revealed that 77% of ruling party supporters would prefer the First Lady to be Medina's running mate on the PLD ticket. 56.7% think the running mate should be chosen.

PLD candidate Danilo Medina said that the poll shows the result at the start of his presidential campaign not the results. He told Hoy that there are still nine months to go that he says are sufficient to win the 20 May election.
