Internet accounts, the total in 2010 was 622,931, are up in 2011. For the first quarter the figure reaches 672, 250, a growth of 7.9%. In the meantime, the total number of Internet users increased by 6.8%, or 265,592 more, with the total number going from 3,851,278 in 2010 to 4,116,870 at the end of the first quarter of 2011, according to statistics from the Dominican Telecommunications Institute (Indotel).
Meanwhile, the number of landlines and mobile phones diminished in the first quarter of 2011, going from 9.9 million at the end of 2010 to 9.7 million in the first three months of 2011, a decrease of 1.1%. For the period, the number of mobile phones decreased, going from 8.8 to 8.7 million, which represents a 1.3% decrease, according to the Indotel. The total number of residential lines went from 713,206 in 2010 to 722,705 in the first quarter of this year, which shows a growth of 1.3%.
The complaints from clients of telecommunication services have increased over recent days, while the sector decreased during the first half by 2.3%. According to Indotel's Customer Service Center, the reasons for complaints are unsatisfactory service or complaints about the service, such as breakdowns, cancellation of service, invoicing, threatening calls and fraud, increased by 7,796 during the first quarter of the year, going from 13,626 in 2010 to 21,422 this year. But the total number of complaints from 2002 up to 30 June 2011 is 185,303 cases, of which 12,806 are complaints, 6,104 are allegations, 14,016 are complaints on resources, 9,610 were reports of stolen cell phones, and 17,492 were to verify a number. In addition, another 53,366 were referred back to the service provider. Some 15,446 customers made their complaint personally, 124,526 by telephone, 33,410 via OPTIC, 5,719 filed their complaints over the Internet, 715 by fax, and 1,691 actually wrote a letter.
Customer complaints over the deterioration of cable television, telephone and Internet service increased over the past two weeks. Recently Tricom had problems with a submarine cable in Punta Cana, which affected Tricom customers as well as Claro and Wind's, but the bad weather also led to complaints because of damage to Internet lines, cable TV and landlines. Indotel's Customer Service Center statistics state that between January 2002 and 20 June this year 184,323 of the total 185,303 complaints were settled, representing 99.4% of cases. 144,252 of complaints came from customers in the National District, 288 from overseas and 40,763 from the provinces.
